An academic discipline is a sub division of knowledge that is taught and researched at the college. Characteristics of academic discipline - 1. Academic discipline has specific terminology. 2. It has theories and concepts. 3. It has specific object of subject. 4. It has specific language.
Before discussing the characteristics of academic disciplines with the reference to history subject let us first consider the term discipline and Academic. The word discipline has being delivered from the word "discipulus" which means pupil, discipline and also means teaching. Where on the other hand the term discipline is defined as by the Oxford English dictionary as as "a branch of learning or knowledge". Even in Latin term discipline means teaching, learning and instruction.
And thus Academic discipline is the branch of knowledge that is taught and researched as part of higher education.academic discipline is also known as field of study, field of inquiry and research field.
The characteristics of academic disciplines with the reference to history subject are as follows:- 1)Body of specialised knowledge- Academic disciplines have body of specialised knowledge referring to their object of research,which is specific to them and not generally shared with another discipline.
2) theories and concepts- Academic disciplines have theories and concepts that can organise the accumulated specialist knowledge effectively.
3) specific terminology- Academic disciplines use specific terminologies or a specific technical language adjusted to their research object.
